A TEACHING SEQUENCE ON DNA EXTRACTION FOR TEACHING GENETICS TO YOUNG PEOPLE AND ADULTS

Abstract

There is a need for training with new configurations for the Youth and Adult Education (YAE) curriculum in order to increasingly bring these subjects closer to social and professional spaces. YAE has particularities that make it quite different from regular education, and most of its students are usually out of school for years. On the other hand, the YAE curriculum brings all the content of each series to be developed in one semester, leaving a short time for the work of each subject. The objective of this work was to develop and implement a didactic sequence on genetics for the 3rd year of YAE high school in a state school in the city of Araguari – MG. The didactic sequence consisted of a set of 5 classes, one theoretical class and four practical classes. We used four research data collection instruments, namely, practical class scripts, quiz game on the kahoot platform, logbook and structured interview. Our results show that differentiated methodologies help YAE students to learn content such as genetics. The practical classes, with special emphasis on DNA extraction, represent a novelty that for many of them, as it is not present in their school routine and because it arouses interest and helps in learning, should be further explored.
