Abstract

This article discusses two science fiction works, the short story “Alchemical Setback” from the book “Fables of Time and Eternity” and the movie “Gravity”. In different contexts, the works portray stories of women scientists, and based on them, activities were developed with young people from a non-formal education space to discuss the purpose of these characters. Considering the cultural pedagogies exercised by the media, and from a critical approach, the main focus was to problematize the frequent expectations regarding the purpose of women, which are often limited to the sphere of caregiving. Based on the activities carried out, it was possible to observe how prevalent this perspective still is in the discourse of the young people in question, highlighting the need for diverse representations of women scientists in the media and the potential of these products to stimulate essential discussions, such as gender equality in society.
